I have installed the 'with tools' version. All MS updates inplace, Visual Studio C++ installed. However, the link to management Studio is a generic icon which points to where ssms.exe SHOULD be but is not. Ssms.exe is nowhere to be found.

This is a production server. I have tried to uninstall SQL, but this leaves folders and registry entries, etc. I now want to switch to SQL Express x86. Will this 32-bit version present fewer issues - will it even run on a x64 machine?

I am limited to what I can do to remedy this since this is a production box. I have not been able to reproduce the issue on a VM test x64 setup. I don't think 32-bit version of SQL Server Express will be the solution to this problem. From the compatibility point of view Windows Server 2008 R2 is the same as Windows 7. My guess is that you are trying to install SQL Server 2008 Management Studio which Windows Server 2008 R2 correctly identifies as incompatible. You have two options: • You should have the option of ignoring the warning and proceeding with the installation. Once SSMS Express is installed use Windows Update to apply the latest Service Pack that will fix the incompatibility. • You could also install the latest SQL Server Management Studio Express - SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1, which is compatible with Windows Server 2008 R2.
